Nestled in the heart of Torrance, Kantaro Sushi is a beloved mom-and-pop Japanese restaurant that offers a genuinely authentic sushi experience. Specializing in classic sushi and Japanese dishes, this unassuming spot delivers masterfully prepared fare that delights both longtime sushi lovers and curious newcomers alike.
At Kantaro Sushi, freshness is paramount. The menu features a broad selection of nigiri and sashimi with meticulously sourced ingredients — from delicate Egg ($2.50), succulent Squid ($3.90), and tender Octopus ($4.50), to richly flavored Tuna ($5.50) and the luxurious Sweet Shrimp ($6.90). Fans of refined flavors will appreciate the Giant Clam ($7.50) and the expertly smoked Fresh Water Eel ($4.50), each bite melting effortlessly with a perfect balance of texture and aroma.
The true highlight, as echoed by many, is the exquisite omakase experience. Priced reasonably and served with impeccable care, the omakase journey offers a captivating progression of courses. Each dish arrives on unique, thoughtfully chosen dinnerware that enhances the sensory experience. The succession of flavors and textures—from the light and briny to the deeply umami—creates a symphony on the palate, with some favorites thoughtfully revisited in varied preparations for an added surprise. This proves Kantaro’s dedication to craft and innovation in a setting that feels warm and nostalgic.
Stepping inside Kantaro Sushi, patrons are immediately enveloped by a cozy, old-fashioned atmosphere that channels the charm of a classic Tokyo sushi bar. The friendly, attentive service complements the relaxed vibe, making it an inviting place to savor sushi at your own pace. Whether enjoying their popular $25 Sushi Supreme—10 pieces of nigiri paired with a choice of California or spicy tuna roll served alongside warming miso soup—or exploring the take-out lunch menu introduced during COVID, every meal here is thoughtfully crafted to satisfy.
Practical dining considerations are also addressed with ease. Located at the corner of a quaint shopping plaza on W Carson Street, parking is typically hassle-free. Given the warm buzz and loyal following, making a reservation is highly recommended, especially for the coveted omakase dinners.
Kantaro Sushi is more than just a restaurant—it’s a treasured culinary hideaway where authenticity, value, and heart come together. For those seeking an intimate sushi adventure, where quality reigns supreme and every bite tells a story, Kantaro Sushi stands out as an essential Torrance destination.
I love mom and pop joints like this. The omakase, which was reasonably priced, was an amazing experience. Each offering was prepared masterfully. This unassuming restaurant is located at the corner of a petite shopping plaza, so parking shouldn’t be too difficult. It’s best to make a reservation well in advance.
Really delicious sushi at this Mom and Pop shop. The ingredients are fresh and the service is wonderful. The value is incredible as well. Highly suggest the Omakase!
Great value for the money. The amount served in their omakase was very satisfying for us. It felt like the progression of the dishes (with reappearances of a few that were cooked and served in two different forms to enjoy), along with the unique dinnerware each course was served on, were well thought-out. A wide range of flavors and textures that excite the senses—most were familiar, with a few that were unexpected and fun. The green tea/matcha they serve in retro cups is quality. All of this in a nostalgic, no-frills space with prompt and friendly service.
One of my favorite spots in Torrance for quality sushi. They’re typically open for lunch, close for a break, then reopen for omakase-only dinner. However for COVID, they’ve established a takeout only menu that features what you’d usually find on the lunch menu! My absolute favorite thing to order is the $25 sushi supreme. 10 piece nigiri, and either California or spicy tuna roll. Served with miso soup and salad. The quality of the sushi is great for the price, and I’m always full and happy after. My only feedback would be to use less rice in the nigiri. I’ve also done the $50 omakase dinner multiple times. again, I think omakase at this price and quality is unmatched. So many courses, dishes are straightforward but top quality, and you leave STUFFED.
Best sushi at very affordable price for omakase. Very friendly service and very old-fashioned interior. Whoever wants good omakase and retro vibe, this is the place :)
Best omakase for the value in South Bay. Owned by a Japanese husband and wife duo in a strip mall corner. Parking has always been available every time we’ve been here, and we’ve came over 6+ times now. Go often and keep them in business for years to come!
So. Much. Food. Hole in the wall spot with amazing quality and great price. Waitress explained each dish. I’d say the variety was less than other omakase, but the quantity and flavor was spot on. Sake is really cheap too. Definitely coming back.
